The Turncrafter plus is a great little wood lathe! I've been looking for a small and affordable wood lathe for a while, and recently I came across this offering from PSI. It's designed as a beginner wood lathe, and it's small footprint and low cost make it ideal for that purpose.
I was a little hesitant about it at first since it's motor is only 1/4 HP whereas some other mini lathe models have 1/2 or even 3/4 HP motors, so I was worried it might be underpowered or struggle at top speed. As it turns out it's not a problem at all, this lathe is very small, and the motor is more than strong enough to turn any piece that will actually fit the lathe.
The Turncrafter plus has variable speed control right out of the box, which is often only seen in much more expensive lathes. How PSI managed to do this while still keeping the cost under 200$ in kind of a mystery. The most comparable lathe in terms of size and features is probably the Jet 1014VSI, which will cost you about 3x more, but arguably has better machining and finish than the Turncrafter.
I definitely recommend this lathe if you are looking for something small and inexpensive, those are the two most striking features of the Turncrafter plus. It's barely 2 feet long and less than a foot deep so it will not take up to much of your shop, and makes a very good complement to a larger lathe, if you already have one. It can be used to perform small projects which require finesse and detail that might be lost with a larger more overpowering lathe.
The Turncrafter comes with all the necessary equipment, such as tool rests and centers etc. and you can add a set of chisels and still have the total be around 200$, if you're looking to get into wood turning without too much initial investment it's hard to pass up that kind of deal.
So far I've used it for several small pieces, bowls and cups mostly and found it to perform admirably. It doesn't struggle even at the highest speeds, and movement is very smooth from the bottom to the top of its speed range. It's not loud at all and doesn't seem to vibrate too much. It weighs somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 pounds, so it's solid enough to damp any vibration produced by the motor.
